I Went For A Laser To Erase Pigmentation

Those who suffer from large pores know that many products that claim to shrink pores generally do not live up to the hype. Apparently, there is a laser treatment you can do to make your pores smaller and results are seen as early as the first session. Pico Toning uses ultra-short pulses of light to “tone” and rejuvenate the skin. In case you were wondering what “toning” of the skin means, it is exactly what your after-cleanser toner does – freshens the skin and shrinks the pores. Lasers which tone the skin do the same but even better – with light energy. This achieves an exfoliation and collagen stimulation effect. Traditional laser toning treatments use older nanosecond lasers, whereas Pico Toning uses the latest picosecond lasers. In case you were wondering, one picosecond is one trillionth of a second, or 1/1000 of a nanosecond! Ultra-fast pulsing has many obvious benefits – firstly, less heat is generated (this also means less discomfort!) and the picosecond shatters pigments beneath the skin at Continue Reading

Why LED Light Therapy Is Good For Your Skin

You may have noticed some medispas putting an extra step in their hybrid facials – LED red or blue light. What exactly is LED light therapy and what does it do to the skin? LED stands for “light emitting diode”, which emits different colours of light energy. Not to be confused with a laser, LED light therapy was originally developed to speed up healing of wounds and post-surgical scars. In the correct wavelength, the light energy provides energy for fibroblasts in the dermis to produce collagen, giving skin a more youthful and plump appearance. Hence, apart from skin healing properties, LED light therapy has also happily found its niche in rejuvenation of healthy skin. The fact that many doctors now use LED red light as a post-laser treatment to speaks volumes of its effectiveness as an anti-ageing adjuvant.   LED Light Therapy As Standalone Or Add-On Treatments Indeed, according to Dr Kenneth Lee, founder of the SW1 Clinic, which uses the Healite II in almost all their laser treatment programs, Continue Reading

Is Skin Lifting Without Surgery Possible?

Try googling for “face lifting without surgery” and you will see links to non-invasive skin tightening treatments (there are so many!), botox, fillers and even tutorials on facial exercises or workouts. Face gyms, they call it, involves anything from rolling a ball over your face, to slapping exercises, facial sculpting with jade. Muscle manipulation is believed by face gym fanatics to improve the appearance of sagging faces, and hopefully this reshapes one’s face to a more youthful visage in time. Whether 30 minutes of facial exercises is able to noticeably lift sagging skin remains to be seen but truthfully, I am skeptical of it, because it reminds me of older ladies I see at the gym who are even stronger than I am, but still have loose, crepey skin all over. Also, there is no certainty of anything. For example, how long will I need to do facial exercises before I can expect a visible facelift effect? At least for non-invasive skin lifting treatments such as the FDA-approved Ultherapy, I Continue Reading

Lip Rules We Learnt From The World’s Most Beautiful People

Plump lips, petite noses and large eyes. These are universal traits found in the most beautiful faces of the world. Ask a beauty expert and they will speak of “golden proportions” dating all the way back to the ancient greeks who discovered a mathematical proportion to all things beautiful – Phi (1.618). As a face approximates this ratio, the more beautiful the face perceived. The underlying message is – we judge beauty subconsciously by symmetry and proportion. It follows then, that there is also a precise formula to achieving a beautiful pout. The ideal ratio of the volume of the upper to lower lip is 1: 1.16. So the lower lip should appear slightly more full than the upper lip. Learn about 3 lip rules and accompanying tips for a youthful and attractive-looking pout.   Rule #1 Lip ageing is real Doctors say that around the age of 40, the philtrum – groove of the upper lip would have drooped between 3 to 15mm. Restore or change lip proportions to Continue Reading

Botox Or Fillers: Which Is For You?

Botox and fillers have been around for years but we learnt that the difference between the 2 are not always immediately clear. So we’ve put together a guide to explain the differences between them so that you can work out which you would likely prefer to have. Of course you should always consult with an experienced injector and discuss which (or both) is more suitable for the improvements you want to make!    Botox Vs Fillers Botox (or Botulinum toxin) is a solution that is injected in very small, measured doses into specific facial muscles. By blocking nerve signals in the injected muscle(s), the resulting effect is temporary paralysis i.e. movement of these muscles of the face are restricted, resulting in softening or even disappearance of wrinkles. A typical Botox injection of smaller muscles such as those in the forehead, or outside the eyes last approximately 3 to 4 months. Obviously the higher the dose, the more long-lasting the treatment, but also the more “frozen” the look! Botox is Continue Reading
