Nasolabial Folds: Smile Lines

smile lines

Nasolabial folds, also known as smile lines, are the creases that run from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth. They are a natural part of the aging process, but they can become more prominent over time due to a number of factors, including:

  • Loss of volume: As we age, the skin loses volume and elasticity, which can lead to the appearance of wrinkles and folds. This is especially true in the area around the cheeks and mouth, where the skin is thinner and more delicate.
  • Gravity: Gravity can also play a role in the formation of nasolabial folds. As we age, the skin on our face naturally begins to sag, which can make nasolabial folds more pronounced.
  • Genetics: Some people are simply more prone to developing nasolabial folds than others. This is often due to genetic factors.
  • Facial expressions: Facial expressions such as smiling and frowning can also contribute to the formation of nasolabial folds. Over time, these repeated muscle contractions can cause the skin to fold and crease.
  • Sun exposure: Sun damage can also accelerate the aging process and lead to the appearance of premature wrinkles and folds.

While there is no way to completely prevent nasolabial folds from forming, there are a number of medical aesthetic treatments that can help to reduce their appearance. Some of the most popular treatments include:

  • Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers are injectable substances that can be used to add volume to the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds. The most common type of dermal filler used to treat nasolabial folds is hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance that is found in the skin.
  • Botulinum toxin injections: Botulinum toxin injections, such as Botox®, can be used to relax the muscles around the mouth that contribute to the formation of nasolabial folds. This can help to reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds and give the face a more youthful appearance.
  • Water Drop Lift: A non-invasive procedure that uses dual-frequency ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen and elastin production, improve skin hydration, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, including nasolabial folds.
