It is nearing the end of 2017 and in this article, we look back at the year that has flown by, celebrating 5 deserving candidates who have endured the year and emerged champions after much controversy.
Most Inclusive Cosmetics Line Of The Year
Rhianna launched her Fenty Beauty line this year to the raves of media and consumers alike. Two years in the making before this groundbreaking release, Fenty includes shades of foundations from the palest of pale to deep, deep browns, making this one of the most inclusive cosmetics lines of the year.
What’s beautiful about this release is that it is more than just face paint. People have blogged about it, touched that they have finally found the perfect foundation with correct undertones. This makeup has become a little bit of a social movement, women are reacting to it and saying other companies which only launch the usual 4 or 5 shades of colour is not OK. Since its release, their cruelty-free products have sold out, showing how far Rhianna has gone to reaching to women of different backgrounds, especially to women of colour.
Best Comeback Of The Year
Several weeks ago, a huge medical aesthetics and plastics surgery centre was launched in town, except it isn’t exactly new new. The SW1 Clinic is helmed by Dr Low Chai Ling and Dr Kenneth Lee, and is located in the heart of Orchard Road, in Paragon Medical. Spanning half of the entire 13th floor, their swanky clinic may be new, but these doctors are actually former doctors of The Sloane Clinic, famed for its track record in world-class, top-of-the-range treatments and style.
When it closed temporarily suddenly in late 2017, its customers were left confused and feeling stranded. Many went back to The Sloane Clinic (to whatever was left of its four branches), only to find its doctors new and unfamiliar.
Overcoming the odds, the usual and familiar faces of the former Sloane Clinic have managed to revive their practice, coining it SW1, which refers to the postal code of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where Sloane Street sits, symbolizing the growth of Dr Low’s medical aesthetic vision over the last 14 years.
“We apologise for the changes, but now we are back, and endeavoring to serve once again” says Dr Chua Han Boon, who had stayed with The Sloane Clinic for 9 years, and is now at the SW1 Clinic, along with founders Dr Low and Dr Lee, and former colleagues Dr Michelle Lim, Dr Toby Hui and Plastic Surgeon Dr Tan Ying Chien.
A 10-week hiatus could have broken many, but not this one. In fact, these doctors are back with a vengence, with their new 8000 sqft clinic seated even deeper in the heart of this city. The treatments at SW1 are now better and more innovative than before, proving that their comeback is definitely way stronger than their setback!
Most Controversial Product Name of the Year
Tom Ford’s perfume wins not only because it is fucking fabulous, but also because that’s the name of Tom Ford’s latest fragrance. Capitalizing on the famous F-word is exceedingly fun, because it elicits a great deal of satisfaction and adds a serious punch to the sentiment.
So does it really smell fucking fabulous? According to the designer, it consists of notes like clary sage oil, lavender, vanilla, bitter almond and amber… nevermind. This limited edition fragrance is worthy of ownership just by virtue of its name.
This was exclusively sold at the Tom Ford Boutique on Sloane Street from September 2017.
Most Heartbreaking Fall Of The Year
The Victoria Secrets Fashion Show 2017 took place in Shanghai in late November. This most watched fashion event of the year draws approximately 800 million viewers per year, and draws your breath with the spectacular runway, props, and their A-list models. However, one of its bejeweled angels fell as she took on the catwalk. Comforted by her peers such as Lily Aldrige, the fallen angel picked herself up well, showing how one can really own the moment and move on after a setback.
Best Sports Personality Of The Year
Roger Federer wins BBC’s Best Overseas Sports Personality of the year, for the fourth time! This man has had his share of setbacks but in 2017, became the first man to make history and win eight Wimbleton singles titles, with his dramatic final triumph over Nadal in Melbourne this year, after a five-year drought of grand slam wins.
Tennis may be an individual sport but look up to the player’s box and you see this team called family. Roger Federer has a strong support system, with a wife who can relate to the trials of a professional athelete and a set of twins who have provided inspiration for his wins up till his mid 30s.
And this sums up 2017. Stay tuned for 2018!
