Some people refer to them like they are the same thing (afterall, both are anti-aging injections), but in reality, they are two very different things. And the line between Botox and fillers become even less distinct, when both can also be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. So what are they exactly, and which one is best for you?
BOTOX
Botox injections are anti-wrinkle injections. This is actually a toxin called botulinum toxin, and in very high doses, can be dangerous. But if you are wondering how this can be approved by health authorities worldwide for cosmetic treatments, that is because therapeutic and cosmetic doses used in medicine are really tiny. In aesthetics, Botox is directly injected into specific muscles to intentionally relax them. When these muscles are unable to form its usual tension, the creases or wrinkles they normally cause will also soften or disappear.
Other uses of Botox include temporary skin lifting, such as the jawline and neck, jaw muscle slimming, reduce oil production (Microrefine Botox) and even treat excessive sweating in areas such as the underarms, palms and soles.
Botox lasts on average 3 to 6 months.
FILLERS
These are generally volumizers – they are placed in tissue, beneath the skin for a rejuvenative filling effect. There are many different types of fillers with the most commonly used being hyaluronic acid fillers, which can be dissolved readily should the need arise. Other types of fillers including collagen-stimulating fillers which usually cannot be dissolved. These fillers are bio-degradable fillers – your body breaks them down gradually over 6 to 24 months (usually).
Fillers can replace lost volume in the face due to the natural process of aging, or weight loss. Injected in the right places, fillers can also temporarily relax some tissues and induce a subtle lift. Common treatment areas include the cheeks, temples, and undereye area (tear trough). Fillers can also be used to contour or sculpt the face – define cheekbones, elongate a short chin, or raise the nose bridge.
WHICH IS BETTER?
Can you call an apple an orange? Botox and fillers are completely 2 different treatments used for different cosmetic purposes. They do, however, work very well to rejuvenate the face. Both have excellent safety profiles, even though there have been complications reported for both, they are very rare and continue to remain as a popular, non-invasive alternative to cosmetic surgery.
