Beauty Is Really Skin Deep

If I had a favorite age, it would be 23. It was a fairly independent age, having completed my studies and 2 years past 21, my parents were comfortable with me making my own decisions. My skin was young, I had no pigmentation problems and no idea what fine lines or wrinkles meant. I liked my jawline then – tight. Photos were taken with ease, I didn’t have to find a flattering angle to camouflage a jawline which would disappear into the neck 15 years later.

Fast forward to 38, I wished I knew how aging began.

If you are in your early 20s, live your life to the fullest, bare your mid-drift, show off your bikini bod. Wear sunblock, have your face cleansed by a professional regularly. From your late 20s, it’s time to invest in anti-aging treatments and have your skin thank you for all you have done later.

In this article, SKINMAG interviewed 3 doctors from the SW1 Clinic (who formerly from The Sloane Clinic) for some anti-aging advice.

Illuminate

Radiate with an ethereal glow with SW1 Clinic’s Baby Skin Program. Their BB Aquatouch treatment revives dull skin with the Fraxel Thulium laser that treats in the 1927 nm wavelength. Lasers of this wavelength are particularly effective in targeting the epidermal basal layer of the skin i.e. sun-damaged skin and pesky pigmentation. It’s enviable brightening effect is dramatic, and pores are also noticeably refined.

SW1’s elegant Baby Skin Program combines BB Aquatouch with Pearl Eclat, an add-on post-laser treatment which bathes the skin in a rice and carrot callous stem cell extract. If that doesn’t sound nourishing enough, Glutathione, a potent anti-aging and whitening antioxidant is included in this 2-ml ampoule specially curated by Dr Low Chai Ling, founder of the SW1 Clinic.

For those who prefer a treatment with zero downtime, the intense pulsed light (IPL) is a facial photorejuvenation treatment whose instant brightening effect gives a party-ready glow.

Smoothen

Ever wondered why some fair and clear skinned individuals still find the natural dewy look hard to achieve? “One of the factors contributing to dull skin is irregular texture”, says Dr Michelle Lim, Medical Consultant at the SW1 Clinic, who recommends Clear and Brilliant, a laser which smoothens and texturizes the skin to a natural sheen.

“Make your foundation work for you. Makeup should not just mask imperfections. It should amplify your skin’s natural skin tone and skin should gradually approximate flawlessness with lighter coverage, with such treatments”.

Tighten

If you are approaching your mid 30s, watch out for fine lines. These are not quite dense like wrinkles, so they can’t really be “botoxed” away. Caused by loss of collagen and elasticity because of natural aging, the first lines tend to appear around the eyes, mouth and forehead. “Iron these out before they develop into wrinkles”, says Dr Chua Han Boon, who performs the SmartX Lite treatment for patients with these aging woes. “Once wrinkles form, it is not the end of the world, we can still soften them with botox, lasers and fillers” adds Dr Chua.
